Little Things.

Sometimes, when you’re feeling down and out you need to take some time for yourself, but in a world where time is limited and stress is always looming it can be hard to unwind. These are some of my favourite little ways I take care of myself when I most need it.

Write & Walk –

When I’m feeling overwhelmed it’s so easy to lock myself in my room to mill over the issues I’m facing. Instead of this I like to spend some time writing (more scribbling) out what I’m feeling in a notebook, emptying out my brain of all negative thoughts or issues and then closing it. Getting rid of emotion that is clouding my judgement is so important so I can process issues rationally. After clearing my brain taking a walk is such a good way to re group sensible thoughts and think through whatever I need to without overwhelming myself.



Read –

No matter what I’m reading I always feel more at peace with a good book and a nice steamy tea. Weather escaping to a cosy cafe or a park bench having a wee read is always a way I am able to unwind. I’ve just finished ‘Scar Tissue’ by Anthony Kiedis and I’m beginning to read ‘Call Me By Your Name’ by André Aciman, I can’t wait to get stuck in.


Listen –

Rocking out to some of my favorite music is always so therapeutic for me. Having a good jam session on the way home from a stressful day at work or school never fails to make me feel more upbeat and clear minded.  I love listening to happy, cheesy feel good music (think natasha bedingfield pocketful of sunshine.) It’s really hard to feel sad when you’re literally surrounded by happy.


Pamper –

Weather you are feminine or masculine a good warm bath and a face mask is always a great way to relax. As a lifelong Lush lover my favourite unwind combo is a simple avobath and / or butterball bomb in some hot water and slather of cupcake face mask all over my face and neck. The smell of these products alone is enough to lift any weight off my chest. If the warm moisturising soak isn’t enough when you hop out the lovely scents stick to you following you around in a sort of cocoa hug.

If baths aren’t your thing a nice steamy shower is also great to de-stress. I love lushes’ whoosh shower jelly for a citrusy pick me up. If sweet smells are more your thing the BonBon factory make amazing sweet scented shower and body products that are all vegan.  I adore the gelato sugar scrub  for a lovely sweet pick me up.


Talk –

Sometimes it pays to just talk it out. It could be with a friend, a therapist, your cat. Whoever you trust vocalising your struggles is so much easier and healthier than keeping them in and letting them brew, because they will eventually bubble over. If I’m  struggling to vocalise what I’m feeling I head back to writing everything down, sorting out the junk and organising my feelings – it makes it much easier to be heard for what I actually want to say.

These are just a few ways I cope with stress and tricky situations. Everyone has their own mechanisms to overcome challenges in a healthy and constructive way. If you or someone you know is struggling to overcome issues make sure you reach out to someone you trust that can help.
